MJBSUMMER 2010 FIRST WEEK (June 1-7. Posted: June 3)
Yesterday I decided to read the final book of the famous Harry Potter sequence; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. Currently I’ve read until page 210. So far, I have loved every single chapter of this book. The author, J.K. Rowling, is a goddess in the art of writing; her limitless imagination takes us to places and into situations so beautifully crafted that I honestly cannot stop flipping through the pages. One of the most important themes I’ve encountered throughout the pages I’ve read is MYSTERY. Harry is taken aback when realizing there’s a lot more to Dumbledore’s past than what he thought he knew. Rumor has it that Albus was involved with the Dark Arts; Harry is trying to figure out whether these rumors have some speck of reality in them. In his will Dumbledore left Harry, Hermione, and Ron some priceless objects. They have to uncover the secrets linked to these object and find a way to finally end Voldemort’s life. No wonder this book is a world-wide-best-seller. (172 words)
SECOND WEEK (June 8-14. Posted: June 13) Having read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows I must say this book was extraordinarily good. Now I understand all the Harry Potter geeks and freaks. Even though Harry’s story to us ends in this book, it’s a whole new beginning to the character’s life without dealing anymore with Voldemort. All the unsolved mysteries are deciphered, Dumbledore’s intention to help Harry is finally understood, and we come to realize the true meaning of valor. Without a doubt the most enthralling theme of the book is Bravery. But not the type of bravery we see in super heroes; where people gawk at them fighting in the sky in a huge show of pride. But the silent bravery, where true heroes fight for the greater good without needing to show it off to the rest. Without the satisfaction of having people look up to them in admiration, but the self satisfaction of doing what’s right, even if it means their lives are at risk. (164 words)
THIRD WEEK (June 14-21. Posted: June 20)
A few days ago with some of my friends, we went to Valle de Angeles to spend the day. After walking the streets for a while we met up these missionaries who came all the way from Florida. They had arrived at Tegucigalpa since May. The purpose of their arrival was to help poor, needy schools and nurseries. They told us about how good they felt helping people from countries in need, like ours. It really was touching to hear stories from these people who travel thousands of miles to lend a hand. Personally, the realization that we; people who live in the same city, don’t seem to help as much as we could, well, it hit me hard. (128 words)
FOURTH WEEK (June 22-28. Posted: June 26)
This week I read the most recent book of Candace Bushnell; The Carrie Diaries. The book is about Carrie Bradshaw before she became the writer-and-fashion-goddess we all know of. This book deals with her while she was in high school during her senior year. Apparently and hard to believe, she wasn’t very popular in high school. She actually felt like no one understood her some times. Throughout her senior year, she falls in love with the tipical bad boy who breaks her heart. She lives through it and toughens up. Even though many of her so-called-friends tell her she has no future as a writer, she proves them wrong. After her senior year she goes to a writing program in NYC where by destiny, she is rescued by Samantha Jones from this huge, terrifying city for her. And this is where her life begins as a New Yorker. (157 words)
FIFTH WEEK (June 29 – July 5 Posted: July 6) 1984 by Orwell takes place in the city of London which has been transformed into a negative utopia. Government has found a way to psychologically abuse of citizens and as a result, alter their minds to forget the old London, their old memories, and everything that has to do with past lifestyles. One of the most represented themes during the first seven chapters is the way government uses psychological as well as physical means to maintain power. This totalitarian government is ruled by The Party and the main character of this organization is called Big Brother. Winston Smith, the main character of the book, knows how happy he could be if only he were to think and act as a free man without this being a crime. No independence or freedom of any kind exists in this utopia, instead there’s fear and absolute faith in The Party. I’ve never read a book quite like this one, it’s reallyyyy good. (170 words)
SIXTH WEEK I saw the movie Great Expectations which is based on the book of the same title written by Charles Dickens. One of the greatest things of this movie is it originality, it’s nowhere near an ordinary chick-flick. The main character Finn meets the love of his life Estella when they’re really young and he instantly falls for her. She, on the other hand, comes from a very rich family and learns how to break boy’s and eventually men’s hearts all along; especially Finn’s. Estella has been taught to never trust men but Finn is willing to take away her fear and in return, show her how great they could be together. And oh does he teach her well. I’m definitely buying the book, if the movie is this awesome I can just imagine how the book is!
SEVENTH and EIGHTH WEEKS. During the last weeks of summer I went to Orlando, Florida with my family. We chose to spend our vacations there because of Harry Potter’s wizarding world which debuted a few months ago in Islands of Adventure. We are Potter geeks, true life. It was the best experience of my summer. All the rides were very cool and the workers at the shops, food courts, etc. really acted like they actually lived in Hogsmeade. They made it seem so real. While making a line at the Three Broomsticks for butterbeer (Deliciousssss) I had a conversation with one of the waiters. She told me stories of the nurse; Madam Pomfrey and we discussed her horrible tasting medicine.
We met some real characters in the trip including a crazy guy who worked at a candy store. I can’t believe we actually bought food from him. Obsessed with Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and with Princess Aurora from The Sleeping Beauty, my cousin Valerie and I got really weird stares from parents and little girls who were also shopping in the Princess store at downtown Disney. They asked if we needed any help locating the correct store we were looking for or if we were just shopping for our baby sisters. But we were not lost and we don’t even have baby sisters. We just love knowing that the little kids we once were still live in us and won’t leave, ever; even when workers glare at us for screaming at each other while showing princess lunchboxes and hugging princess pillows. So this was my summer and I really can’t believe I actually finished this project after the coup d’ etat we made to Ms. Davis.
